Understanding Our Weekly Math Homework

Each Friday students receive their weekly math homework sheet that is expected to be completed by the following Friday. This homework sheet is designed to be a cumulative review of all units of study throughout the year.

The homework sheet will always have the same format: side one of the sheet will be practice multiple choice questions taken from past district assessment questions, curriculum targets, etc. This is the cumulative part of the homework sheet as these questions will vary across all units of study to keep all concepts “fresh.” This will help to better prepare students for the district end of year assessment in May. Students are expected to show their thinking for each question so that a strategy to solve is easily identifiable.

The second side of the weekly math sheet will be written response questions focusing on the current unit of study. Once again, showing their work is very important for these types of questions. The weekly review will end with mental math questions.

Weekly homework is meant to be a review for students, allowing them another opportunity to practice skills learned in class. We will be correcting these sheets in class together so that students may share strategies for solving problems. I am available anytime to help any student who is experiencing difficulty as long as it is brought to my attention before the date that the homework is due.

Reading in English or French is expected daily. Students may alternate between 10-15 minutes of French and English reading each night. We are keeping track of French reading using bingo sheets attached in the agenda.

There may be extra work brought home occasionally in circumstances where students are working on projects, class work was not completed in class, etc.
